Hi Peter,

I have always appreciated your drumming and music, esp. the ECM stuff...your playing fits that so well.

And the groove on Green Earrings from the live Steely Dan disc is one of my favorite grooves, just pops and sings...cool fills and transitions. I'd love to have heard your interpretation of Aja.

re: what did I learn (from the Kenton "Birthday in Britain" recording) ... the most immediate thing was that I was playing the ride cymbal beat -- the element of the drumset/chair that was supposed to drive and swing the band -- on "auto-pilot" of sorts, and I realized that the intensity or groove of the beat, as well as the actual "ding, ding-a ding" ride pattern actually changed every time I got more interested in doing something with my left hand or right foot, etc... and the overall feeling of the music suffered as far as I was concerned. So, that started me on this whole thing of BASIC independence exercises (which I still do), very simple ON THE BEAT and OFF THE BEAT comping rhythms on the snare, etc., while maintaining my focus on the ride cymbal.

As far as being a gentleman ... well, thanks. But most every drummer I'ever met was a good fellow, and we're lucky to be in this brother-and-sister-hood.

wow -- Hi Peter ! i feel compelled to gush about all the insane shows i have been to with you behind the kit, but i will refrain....but, you DA man !

i will say a belated thumbs up when you verbally slammed stewart copeland years ago in modern drummer print. after he mouthed off about how perhaps you or jazz drummer in general are "insert BS here". good show, my man ! mebbe you feel it wasn't PC now, but me & my drummer buds loved it at the time (YES!). some kind of redemption after similar insults were thrown my way about big band & jazz playing or something. [img]cool.gif[/img]

this is typical...after the initial post (no gig), now i have a gig the night of the 26th. have fun if you guys go see Peter "DA man" Erskine & company.

Peter, I live in New York. I'm not playing this weekend but would really like to hang with you and possibly take a lesson. Tonight (Thur.) April 24th, I'm going to check out my friend Greg Hutchinson play hip-hop! On Fri. night I'm going to see Bernard Purdie. He gave my girlfriend (also a drummer) free tickets.

I saw you play with Bass Desires at Blues Alley. What a show. I was blown away. You were playing, I believe, one of the first K customs. All I can say is that you have something beyond just playing notes, it's magic. Everything I hear you on feels and sounds so good. It is so great that you have found this place.
